Massage for Cancer Patients

Hey everyone! There are two basic things every cancer patient should know when considering adding massage therapy to their treatment protocol.

#1 – massage does NOT cause your cancer to metastasize. There have been multiple studies done and there is no clinical evidence that massage promotes growth of cancer cells. Massage is only contraindicated for direct massage of a tumor.

#2 – No cancer patient should pursue massage therapy as a complimentary therapy without explicit written authorization from their treating physician. ALWAYS consult your oncologist prior to pursuing ANY holistic or additional therapy in addition to your prescribed treatment.

Please note that despite the growing acceptance of massage therapy into the medical community, many insurance policies still do not offer coverage for massage treatment – even with a doctor’s prescription. Consult your carrier for specifics with regard to your individual coverage. Please note that while spas don’t always offer assistance with insurance claimed treatment, individual therapists do.

Lastly, don’t forget to speak with your therapist about a negotiated rate for frequent treatments. Those packages that spas offer might seem attractive, but often you’ll find a much more flexible and personable experience with a private therapist – not to mention a much better price.
